Many of us start the day with something quick and sweet, a bowl of cereal, toast with jam, a pastry, or simply a coffee on the go.
Although these foods can feel comforting and convenient, they may not always give our body the steady nourishment it needs to feel focused, energised and balanced throughout the day.
In Chinese medicine, breakfast is seen as one of the most important meals because it is the time when our digestive energy is naturally at its strongest.
According to the Chinese medicine body clock, the Stomach energy is most active between 7–9am, followed by the Spleen between 9–11am.
The Spleen in Chinese medicine can be loosely compared to aspects of our digestive and metabolic functions, and together with the Stomach, is responsible for transforming the food we eat into the energy that fuels our body and mind.
A nourishing breakfast acts like gently adding wood to a fire. It supports your digestive system, helping your body create the energy it needs for concentration, movement, mood and resilience.
Traditionally, Chinese medicine favours warm, savoury breakfasts that are easier for digestion to process. Cold or very sweet foods first thing in the morning may weaken digestive fire over time, leaving some people feeling tired, sluggish, bloated or craving more sugar later in the day.
A sweet breakfast can sometimes create a cycle that feels difficult to escape.
You may notice:
Good energy shortly after eating
Hunger returning quickly
Reaching for snacks mid-morning
Tiredness
Cravings in the afternoon
Difficulty concentrating
Bigger sugar spikes with later meals
Rather than relying on willpower to fight cravings, we can support the body by creating more stable energy from the start of the day.
From a modern physiological perspective, a savoury breakfast helps support steadier blood sugar levels after our overnight fast.
Building your first meal around protein, fibre and healthy fats slows digestion and helps prevent sharp rises and crashes in blood glucose, which can contribute to cravings, energy dips and difficulty concentrating.
This is one of the reasons nutrition can have such a powerful effect on how we feel day-to-day: the small choices we repeat regularly send signals to our hormones, metabolism and nervous system.
A nourishing breakfast does not need to be complicated. You could try:
Eggs with avocado and sautéed vegetables
Smoked salmon with wholegrain toast
Tofu scramble with herbs and vegetables
Leftover dinner foods (yes, breakfast does not need to look like “breakfast”!)

If you need some inspiration, here are some of my favourite recipes:
Omelette with any veggies you may have in your fridge or freezer
Quick chickpea lablabi
Some people find eating breakfast difficult, especially during stressful periods.
When we are constantly rushing or waking up already feeling overwhelmed, our nervous system may be in a more alert “fight or flight” state. Digestion works best when the body feels safe and relaxed.
For some people, gently supporting the nervous system, creating calmer mornings, and slowly rebuilding appetite can be just as important as changing what is on the plate.
Nutrition and wellness advice can feel incredibly overwhelming.
One person tells you to avoid a food, another tells you it is essential. One supplement is described as life-changing, while another expert recommends something completely different.
But your body is unique; your symptoms, history, lifestyle, digestion, hormones and stress levels all tell a story.
This is where combining naturopathy with acupuncture brings deeper clarity.
During a naturopathy consultation, we explore what may be contributing to how you feel; looking at areas such as nutrition, digestion, stress, sleep, hormones, lifestyle and relevant blood markers, before creating a personalised plan that may include nutrition strategies, lifestyle support, targeted supplements where appropriate, and acupuncture.
Rather than spending hours scrolling and trying to work out which natural approach is right for you, you receive clear, practical steps chosen specifically for your body.
No guessing. No following every new wellness trend.
Just learning how to support your body — and work with it, not against it.
If you are looking for personalised naturopathy and acupuncture support, I would love to help you understand your body more deeply and find an approach that feels right for you.
