Pain affects much more than the area that hurts.
It can stop you exercising, make work more difficult, interrupt your sleep and leave you feeling frustrated when it keeps coming back.
Whether you've recently injured yourself, have pain that's developed gradually over time, or are living with a long-term condition, treatment aims to reduce pain, improve movement and help you get back to doing the things that matter to you.
At Sarah Shorter Acupuncture in Honor Oak, I combine traditional acupuncture, Western medical acupuncture and electroacupuncture with an understanding of anatomy and movement to create a treatment plan tailored to you.

You don't need to wait until pain becomes unbearable before seeking help. Many people come to the clinic because they have:
pain that keeps returning
stiffness that's limiting movement
discomfort that hasn't settled after an injury
pain affecting work, exercise or sleep
muscle tension that keeps building up
symptoms they've been told to simply "live with"
Acupuncture can often be used alongside physiotherapy, GP care, exercise programmes and prescribed medication where appropriate.
Research suggests acupuncture may help by:
reducing pain sensitivity
encouraging the release of your body's natural pain-relieving chemicals
relaxing tight muscles
improving circulation to affected tissues
calming an overactive nervous system
The aim isn't simply to mask pain, but to help your body recover and move more comfortably.
Depending on your symptoms, treatment may include:
Traditional acupuncture
Western medical acupuncture
Electroacupuncture
Motor point acupuncture for tight or inhibited muscles
Dry needling where appropriate
Breathing strategies to reduce muscle guarding
Advice to help you keep improving between appointments
Every treatment is personalised. You won't receive every technique, only those most appropriate for your symptoms and goals.
Pain isn't always just about the joint or muscle that's hurting.
Factors such as poor sleep, stress, low energy, nutrition and recovery can all influence how sensitive your nervous system becomes and how well your body heals.
Where appropriate, I also offer naturopathic support alongside acupuncture. This may include:
reviewing your diet and lifestyle
discussing whether blood tests through your GP or private testing may provide useful information
recommending supplements when appropriate
helping you make realistic changes that support recovery
For some people, acupuncture alone is exactly what's needed. For others, combining acupuncture with naturopathic support helps address some of the reasons symptoms keep coming back.
Your first appointment lasts around 60 minutes.
We'll discuss:
your symptoms
when they started
what makes them better or worse
your medical history
how pain is affecting your daily life
We'll then carry out an assessment before beginning treatment.
At the end of your appointment, I'll explain what I think is contributing to your symptoms and recommend a treatment plan that's realistic for you.
This depends on:
how long you've had pain
the type of condition
whether it's an acute injury or a long-standing problem
your overall health and recovery
For recent injuries, some people notice significant improvement after only a few treatments.
Longer-standing or more complex conditions usually benefit from a course of treatment, with appointments becoming less frequent as symptoms improve.
